Rules for IWW's Monthly Competitions

Note: A separate set of rules applies to the Kathleen Grattan Prize for a Sequence of Poems.
  1. IWW’s monthly competitions are open to financial and honorary members of IWW.

  2. There is a maximum of one competition entry per member per competition.

  3. No writing that has been previously published may be entered.

  4. No writing that has won another competition may be entered.

  5. No writing that has previously won 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in an IWW competition may be re-entered.

  6. All writing is to be the writer’s own original work. If the judge suspects AI has been used to write the competition entry, the entry will be disqualified.

  7. Entries to be at least one-and-a-half line spacing for prose (fiction / non-fiction) – this is for the ease of reading for judges. Single spacing is permitted for poetry, and possibly for screenwriting / plays. Font to be at least 12-point, preferably Times New Roman.

  8. Illustrations are not permitted, unless explicitly stated.

  9. Entries are to meet or not exceed the word count, length or time limit as set out in the competition schedule for the competition category you are entering

  10. Unless advised otherwise, only digital entries will be accepted. This may be via email or a submission form, as advised for the competition.

  11. Entries are to be submitted after the competition opening date on the competition schedule, and before the competition deadline.

  12. Covering information is to go into the accompanying email or submission form and includes:

    a. your real name
    b. your pen name (which is what the judge will see)
    c. the title of your entry (which should also be on your competition manuscript)
    d. the actual length of your entry

  13. Your real name must not appear on your competition manuscript, however your pen name may be used if you wish..

  14. The competition manuscript is to be sent as an attachment, preferably as a PDF*, with the file name in the format of ‘title of your entry by pen name’.

For example, if the title of your entry is ‘A walk in the Park’ and your pen name is ‘A Rambler’ then the name of your document will be ‘A Walk in the Park by A Rambler’.

  15. The name of the competition is to go into the email Subject.

  16. Receipt of digitally submitted entries will be acknowledged.

  17. * A PDF is preferred because PDF preserves your formatting on different computer systems. If you send a word processing document, IWW will not be responsible for any incorrect formatting that may occur.
